Pregnancy course reimbursement 2026: what do you get back from your Dutch health insurance?

Many pregnant women wonder whether a pregnancy course is covered by their health insurance. Good preparation for the birth gives you calm and confidence, and helps you head towards the birth relaxed. Fortunately, in many cases you can get part of the cost back through your aanvullende verzekering (supplementary insurance). In this blog you’ll read all about reimbursement for a pregnancy course, the conditions set by health insurers, and why an AGB code matters when you claim. Curious what the course itself involves? Is a pregnancy course reimbursed?

A pregnancy course is usually not covered by the basisverzekering (basic insurance); for that you generally need a supplementary policy.

How much you get back differs per health insurer and supplementary package. Some policies reimburse a fixed amount per pregnancy, while others offer a partial reimbursement.

When do you get reimbursed?

Whether you can claim a pregnancy course depends on:

  • Your supplementary insurance
  • Your health insurer’s conditions
  • The course provider. Note: they need an AGB code!

Many insurers reimburse between €50 and €200 on average for a pregnancy course. So always check your policy conditions beforehand.

Important: claiming a pregnancy course with an AGB code

Many health insurers ask for a valid AGB code from the course provider before you can claim the pregnancy course.

Good news: my pregnancy course has an official AGB code. This means that, depending on your supplementary insurance, you can submit the course to your health insurer for reimbursement.

In other words, you can use the invoice to claim the course from your insurer.

Do you need supplementary insurance?

Yes, in most cases you do. Pregnancy courses are generally not covered by the basic insurance. That’s why many pregnant women choose a supplementary package that includes pregnancy courses. Below is a handy overview of the 2026 reimbursements per health insurer.
